The History of Turner Farms
The history of Turner Farms began in 1968 with the purchase of a single 200 acre dairy farm by Harry Turner Sr. The farm has grown to over 900 acres with the addition of nearby farmland that subsequently became available to purchase or rent.
At the beginning we had a dairy operation with a herd of 60 cows. This continued until 2002 when the dairy herd was sold to start grain farming. Corn, soybeans and alfalfa hay were the initial crops, with an emphasis on producing high quality alfalfa hay. Today over 400 hundred acres are used to grow our alfalfa hay which is sold all over the USA. Corn and soybeans are still produced on farm as well.
While our grain farming continues, a new interest has been added, that of raising alpacas. Our first group of alpacas were bought in February of 2007, and a second group was bought in April of 2007. Today the herd consists of three sires that are available for stud services, 7 females and two gilded males. The herd also has two llamas which protect our herd from predators.
Our goal is to raise and sell alpacas as well as board them until they have reached a capacity of 60 - 70 alpacas. We also sell the fine wool that comes from our Alpaca's, it is spun locally and sold in 20 yard skeins.
